In a barn lot setting, you would want your manure pile as far away from things, and the house as possible, depending on the prevailing wind.
Or maybe a couple of pieces of old junk machinery, cultivators, horse drawn implements no longer used, etc.

We use to have quite a few of those old 8 sided building around, even a few round ones. Want to drive a Pollack crazy? put him in a round barn and tell him to go shit in the corner.
