Re: What did you learn

My very first experience was on a hand-clutch John Deere B, so engaging a clutch was learned early on.

I don't recall for sure, but I suspect my first experience with an automotive-style clutch was probably the neighbors 50-ish Ford pickup. "Neighbors" rented my grandparent's place across the road ...

Sounds like my childhood, Gene. Can't think of a better way to grow up.

Here's a screen shot of the TinkerCAD design for the main tower of the crane. Place blocks in various orientations and dimensions to approximate the shape, then add "holes" to cut away parts you don't want, create angles and such.

Gene, 3D printing isn't difficult. There IS a learning curve, but getting started is easy and then you tweak as you go.

TinkerCAD is freeware 3D design software and I found it very easy to use. Like most things, it gets deeper the harder you look, but again, getting started is easy ...

Built the basic truck a couple of years ago.

Several months back I tried to build a knuckle boom crane and got close but couldn't get the articulation right so it would fold for storage.

Re: Question to all you wise oldtimers

I think you're absolutely right. Teach the kids to get by without ANY electronic devices. I'd go so far as to say without electricity - which IMHO is a very real threat - but I'm not sure I could manage that for long.

They should know how to grow things, how to fix things, how to cook, how to hunt ...

Re: Deer Season.

Younger grandson and his wife are BIG into hunting.

She got a Maine Grand Slam this year: Moose, Bear, Deer and Turkey. The moose was 875 pounds field dressed, don't know the weight on the bear but it was good sized, nice little spike horn to fill the deer ticket. We got a few pounds of selected ...

New Toy

atlas1.jpg

Atlas 12x24 lathe. It's replacing my ancient (120+ years) Seneca Falls and adding utility as it has a quick change gearbox and threading capability.

Got a crapload of cutters with it - like a couple of hundred - in HSS (High Speed Steel) and brazed carbide in various sizes and ...
