Thinking about new project

Post by Bernie/MA » Wed Aug 21, 2019 3:04 pm

Us old mechanics that want to work under our cars can't get up and down as good as we used to. What about a creeper that elevates to sit on and then lower to roll under and back up to get up? I think it's feasible and possible. Been looking for components.

Assuming the raise and lower is powered?

That'd be cool, especially if it was...segmented I guess you'd call it...like a hospital bed. Whole thing goes up and down, and half of it can be raised separately, like raising the head of a hospital bed so you're bent at the waist.

That could be done but I would think that with all the components under the creeper it's going to be
too high to get under a vehicle, unless it's already jacked up about 2 feet? I'm not a mechanic just pondering the situation.

Not trying to be critical but:

Today's cars are so low that very few people even try to get underneath one to work on it. Shops use lifts.

Even assuming I would ever have a car that sets high enough that I might ever be tempted to try to slide underneath it, the biggest problem isn't getting down, it's getting back on my feet afterwards. Maybe you could design a lift or crane that lifts fat old farts back up to their feet.

.I guess it could be made to go higher. This would raise you to a sitting position the way I have it figured now.

Paul, it would be powered by a cordless 3/8 drill via flexible cable. The cane I made lifted 175# with no problem. Capacity would be less I think with sissors action but should be enough. I looked for quite a while to find 3/8 LH acme rod. Finally found it in MO today. McM doesn't have 3/8, 1/2 up. Square steel nuts will have to be machined down to fit 3/4 square tube. Do you think segmented would be desirable?

Segmented what? The nut? Not sure what the advantage to that would be.

Anything you can do to reduce friction would be good.

Ah. Yes, I think that would be a major selling point. I know it would for me.
