NO not in a real sense of the word FLYing. They can hover backwards while in ground effect and do out of ground effect hover. They cannot fly backwards. Reason being, once it slides off the high presser air beneath the main rotor blades to the rear. The tail will force a 180 degree swing around. This will happen in a couple seconds to about 60 seconds. Depending on how good the pilot is on the peddles. It is not flying until it goes through "Transitional lift", at which point it is no longer hovering it is flying. You can feel it do a little shimmy shake when it goes through transitional lift.
