6/1.5 is 4:1 reduction. 1700/4 is 425, so bandsaw wheel is turning at 425 RPM.

14" wheel has a diameter of 44" (Pi times diameter - 3.14 times 14)

44" per revolution times 425 is 18,700 inches per minute.

18,700 divided by 12 is 1558 feet per minute.

(All numbers rounded off)

Or, way too fast for metal...

Paul, my brother is looking at one at Harbor Freight that the blade speed is 500 FPM, would that work on metal?
His bandsaw turns at 240 FPM and seems really slow.

Paul, what site do you use to upload photos to a message board? I've used 'Photobucket' for years but lately I can't get it to cooperate with me. Gerrit set up a site to use on this board called 'for your pics' but I can't get it to open and I assumed that you have disabled it, which is fine because I understand that it cost money to keep it active. If you can point me to a good (FREE) site
to upload photos, I would appreciate it.

I have my own site that I use to stash pictures on. Most of the online pay sites are a pain and I don't have any recommendations there.

200-300 FPM is a general blade speed for cutting metal so the portaband is right in the window.

We had a big Jet bandsaw when I worked at the cannery that ran right around that speed as well.

Would 500 FPM be 'out of the ballpark??

I don't really know, but I'd be curious enough to try it. It would certainly work on aluminum/brass/copper etc.

Might work on steel given the proper tooth count and REALLY slow feed rate.

I was taught to select a blade that would keep at least 3 teeth in contact with the work at all times:
