Fort Leonard Wood, Beekeeper?

Post by GeneMO »

I cant remember ever discussing with you about you ever being stationed here. I now live about 5 miles NW of the cannon range on base.

Keeps me on my toes. Dont know if its thunder or artillery.

Either one, the German Shephard does not like the booms.

Good to hear from you.

Gene,

no, I was never stationed at Fort Lost-in-the-Woods, and it is actually one of relatively few Army posts that I've never at least visited. I have lived places that had near constant hot ranges, and I do miss the sound of artillery firing.

But maybe you'll think this is funny-- I grew up a very few miles from the (now long-closed) Naval Academy Dairy farm. So, for me, the smell of home is the smell of cow manure spread on fields in the hot part of summer. I still love the smell...

Cheers! Stay in touch, eh??

Grew up with cows - beef critters - and all the associated chores. Left home @18 and glad of it.

50-odd years later, I'm out on one of my random motorcycle rides (say...that road looks interesting...) and passed a big (for Maine) dairy farm and the smells of cow shit and fresh silage jerked me back to my youth in a split second.

Actually pulled over, stopped and sat there taking deep breaths for a few minutes...

Isn't it funny how a smell can instantly bring you back to somewhere long ago, and far away? Every time my next-door neighbor (they raise beef critters) spreads, I'm sucked back home too. I'm glad it wasn't just me...the way some of my visiting family grouses about the smell makes me wonder what's wrong with them!
