This went down in early 1970 between Anaconda and Butte, Montana. I don't remember why I was going to Anaconda, but the 750 would hop between 95 and 100. That means I was normally be traveling above 100. The speed limit in Montana in those days had no upper limit, but was limited to 65 miles an hour at night. About halfway between those two cities, I passed the Montana State police. I glanced down at my speed odometer and it read 105 I did not throttle back. The Montana police man sped up until he was a long side me and I still did not throttle down. He got on his hidden cop car loudspeaker, and ask if I needed to be traveling that fast. I shook my head no and he asked me if I would please slow down. I throttle it off until the speedometer drop back below 80. He stayed right alongside me and when I brought the 750 to a steady 80 miles an hour, he smiled, waved and backed his cruiser off in the neighborhood of 70 and I kept going. It was only a year or two when the oil embargo thing started and the gas prices went through the roof. Montana was forced by the Feds to interact a law for all states to lower their speed limit.

What flavor of 750 was that?
My last bike, a Yamaha FJ09 would cruise at 100MPH all day. Only one road anywhere near here where there was a snowballs chance of getting away with it tho. Route 9 runs from Calais on the Canadian border all the way across the state east/west. The first 80 miles or so are largely uninhabited regions of Northern Washington County. Not a lot of traffic during the day (usually wall to wall semis overnight) and pretty lightly policed.
There is a 35 mile stretch that's part of a very scenic route that I rode pretty regularly just so I could let the FJ stretch it's legs a little.
Been known to exercise the Vette on that stretch now that I've given up motorcycles.

It was the last big bike I ever owned a Norton ATLAS with a bench seat and a 5 gallon fuel tank. I would kick down the rear passenger pegs lay down on the bench seat. Whenever a Harley decided it wanted to race. Had to get pissed off at the first wife to figure out how to make that monster do a wheelie. That big bike just didn't wanna stand up like the 350s or smaller ones did
Had a couple of 350 and a 500 liquid cool, shaft Drive Honda. A 500 Suzuki one lung two cycle street legal dirt bike. The Suzuki 500 was a lot of fun in the mountains in Alaska. It would climb trees if you could hang onto it.
I never tried to outrun the chips on their full dress cop Moto Guzzs unless we were in heavy traffic. Their Moto Guzz CHIP bikes was definitely faster than the Norton, but they couldn't get between those narrow post on the bike trails.

Had an Air Force friend in Alaska. He allowed me to drive his Kawasaki 900. I mean to tell you that machine was one hell of a fast two wheel killer.
